The National Guard Counterdrug Program operates in all 54 states and territories to support local, state and federal Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) and Community Based Organizations (CBOs) in America’s .ght against drugs. The program employs just under 2,500 Soldiers and Airmen to support its three core signature programs: Drug Demand Reduction, Decision Superiority and Combatant Commanders.
The National Guard Counterdrug Program currently operates 125 OH-58A+ Kiowa Helicopters to support federal, state and local Law Enforcement Agencies’ demand for aviation support in Counterdrug operations.
Mission support they provide with their full-time pilots and mechanics include area surveillance and reconnaissance; vehicle/fugitive surveillance and tracking, cover/force protection during RAID/Sweeps; disturbed Earth scenario, indoor grows, cannabis eradication and Law Enforcement Of.cer training.
Helicopter capabilities include full time mechanics and pilots, Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR), 30 million candlepower Nitesun, Night Vision Goggles (NVG), GPS, law enforcement compatible Global Wulfsburg Radios.
The Army National Guard recently realigned CD RAID Detachments into Security and Support Battalions. Mission focus remains with LEA support to CD operations however HLS/HLD missions will take on a larger role than before. Transformation also brings the new Light Utility Helicopter for mission support to replace legacy OH-58s.
