Mobile VACIS® Inspection System

Overview

The Mobile VACIS® unit consists of a truck-mounted, non-intrusive gamma ray imaging system that produces radiographic images used in the evaluation of the contents of trucks, containers, cargo, and passenger vehicles to determine the possible presence of many types of contraband. The gamma ray imaging system is integrated onto an International Navistar chassis.

Applications

The Mobile VACIS unit provides substantial flexibility to assist with a variety of different requirements including contraband interdiction, seaport cargo container inspection, explosives detection, detection of stolen goods, and force protection.

Features

The on-site typical set-up time for a Mobile VACIS system is 10 minutes. The scanning of a 40 ft. (12.2 m) container can be accomplished in 6 seconds. Scanning can be performed in a forward or reverse direction on either a stationary or moving object, and a series of containers can be scanned in a single pass using the "Quick Save" software feature. The gamma image and a video image of the target vehicle are stored in the on-board computer to allow further review and analysis.

Benefits

The Mobile VACIS system utilizes gamma rays as opposed to x-rays, allowing for an overall lower cost, smaller operating space, higher system reliability/availability, and safer operation. Object penetration is approximately 6.25 inches (15.9 cm) of steel. The Mobile VACIS design allows for easy maintenance and fast cycle time, as well as maximum operational flexibility.

SAIC's VACIS® Inspection Systems are certified as approved products for Homeland Security under the Support Anti-terrorism by Fostering Effective Technologies Act of 2002 (the SAFETY Act).

* These items are available for purchase on the General Services Administration Law Enforcement and Security Equipment Contract GS-07F-0210J.

SPECIFICATIONS
Penetration

• 6.25 inches (159 mm) steel with 0.75 Ci Cobalt-60 source
• 4.0 inches (102 mm) steel with 1.0 Ci Cesium-137 source (maximum penetration achieved at 1-4 inches/sec (5-10 cm/sec) scanning speed) Resolution
• 0.5 inch (12.7 mm) nominal resolution at the centerline of the target being imaged. Measured at 5mph (8 km/h) scanning speed. (Better resolution is achieved for targets located closer to the source.) Target Size
• Containers or vehicles up to 13 ft. high (4 m)x 8 ft. wide (2.4 m) x 100 ft. long (30.5 m)

ENVIRONMENTAL
Operating Temperature
• -22° F to 122° F (-30° C to 50° C)
Relative Humidity
• Up to 98% R. H., non-condensing
Wind Speed
• Operates in wind conditions up to 40 mph(64 km/h)
Safety
• The Mobile VACIS system is a registered device in compliance with US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) requirements. The Device Registry No. is CA-215-D-110S.
• SAIC Mobile VACIS systems have the lowest dose per scan of all available mobile cargo inspection systems. Nominal dose per scan values above normal background levels at the centerline of a target container are: 4 ľR (0.04 ľSv) for the Cesium-137 gamma ray source configuration, and 10 ľR (0.1 ľSv) for the Cobalt-60 source.

Note: Due to our efforts to continually improve this product, specifications, dimensions and operating
procedures are subject to change without notice. All specifications and measurements are approximate,
based on the standard configuration; results may vary with the application and environment.

• Access Control Zone Dimensions: Approximately 35 ft. (10.7 m) from the source x target vehicle length plus 5 ft. (1.5 m) for a 2mR/h (0.02 mSv/h) boundary.
• Source shutter is a fail-safe design that immediately closes if system power is interrupted.
• Flashing beacons and audible alarms indicate when the gamma ray source is open.
• Emergency lowering valve and hydraulic pump enable source storage in the event of power loss.
• Emergency stop buttons are located in theOperator Cab and on the exterior of the truck.
• On-board lockable source storage container is included.

Power
• The Mobile VACIS is powered from an on-board generator. It can also be powered from fixed-site 240/120 VAC, 1ph (4-wire), 50/60 Hz, 30A (per line) power.

Options
• Cobalt-60 or Cesium-137 gamma ray source
• Low Temperature Operation Kit for extended low temperature operation below 0° F (-18° C)

ADDITIONAL FEATURES
• Can scan in forward and reverse directions
• Can scan in stationary and drive-by inspection modes
• 10° oblique detector/source angle used to detect hidden compartments
• Compatible power connectors and interface cable provided for specific country of operation
