N.Y. National Guard Counterdrug Task Force

Drug Free Starts With Me

The New York National Guard Counterdrug program DDR presents the “2006 Combat Skate Jam.”  The intent of the Skate Jam is to combat the use and effects of illegal drug use in our community.  The NYNG Counterdrug Task Force challenges the Corp of Cadets (COC), Family Readiness Group Dependants, Community Based Organizations (CBO’s) and local youth to an exciting interactive day of competitive skateboarding. Presenting this challenge engages the youth and the community in a healthy alternative activity while increasing drug awareness in a safe and rewarding environment.  The concept applies prevention / demand reduction in the community domain by targeting the identified risk factors of community attitudes, norms and the availability of illicit drugs and applies the protective factors of exposing the community to a prevention message and participation in an extracurricular activity.  Additionally, it applies the research behind The Search Institutes “40 Developmental Assets” by providing the youth of our community a creative way to spend their time. Skateboarding is a fun, active, physically demanding and mentally challenging sport.  Skateboarding may look chaotic and reckless but it is essentially a low impact and relatively safe sport compared to most other popular sports.  With support from the community, skateboarding can be a great activity that builds character, integrity, determination, and creativity.

Campaign Goal

To educate parents, the general public and youth about the negative health effects of illegal drugs and to engage community partners in the effort to combat illegal drugs in New York State.
